Who is The Florida New Majority?

The Florida New Majority is a grassroots organization that mobilizes communities to exercise their collective power on issues like declining neighborhoods, quality education, affordable health care and individual rights.

They’ve called on Rick Scott to support the Dream Act and Marco Rubio to support immigration reform. They have staged sit-ins, community training and protests at the Florida legislature.

Quotes from Gihan Perera, Executive Director of Florida New Majority:

“Senator Rubio was seen as a clear champion on this (immigration reform) issue, but recent reporting reveal a double-talking salesman who is privately sabotaging the very bill he authored and publicly supports.”

“Gov. Rick Scott’s veto of the Driver’s License Law is yet another example of his consistent activism against minority rights. In this case, Gov. Scott is denying a law that has broad bi-partisan support and is already in current practice in the state. In passing this bill by overwhelming majorities in the House and Senate, state officials signaled that they understood that very little is achieved economically and socially by delaying driver’s licenses to those who the state already recognizes as having a right to obtain one under President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Executive Order.

SDC Membership Meeting in Starlite Ballroom. Food Drive.
Oct 9 @ 11:00 pm – Oct 10 @ 12:30 am

Most of us are past the “get the kids to school” phase of life. So why should we concern ourselves with what’s going on in the local schools? Well, consider the following information from University of Florida Graduate Brent Radcliffe currently working as an analyst:

  1. A community’s education system has a direct effect on its economy.
  2. Communities with a better educated workforce draw more businesses.
  3. Areas with educated workforces grow at a faster pace than those without.
  4. Educated workers earn higher wages which they in turn spend in their communities resulting in better service for the entire community.

That’s why we’ve invited Polk County Schools Superintendent Kathryn LeRoy to speak at our October General Membership Meeting. She will discuss the current state of the county’s school system, her vision for its future, and how we as voters can help direct its course.

This should be an informative meeting. If you want a thriving community that attracts good jobs as compared to a depressed economy with low wages and minimal services, you should not miss the October meeting because you are an important player in our community’s economic growth.

New Community Initiative!

Your Solivita Democratic Club is participating in a Can Do Food Drive. Just as our individual votes can collectively elect a president, our individual food items can collectively feed a community.

We will collect all nonperishable food items at each meeting for the remainder of 2013.

The food pantry for Poinciana needs to restock the following items:

  • Peanut Butter
  • Tuna
  • Cereal – low or no sugar preferred
  • Rice – 3 lb. bags preferred
  • Canned goods – fruits, vegetables, beans, meats, etc.
  • Pastas, packagedmeals and instant potato products
  • Dried Beans – pre-packaged sealed bags
  • Protein bars, mac & cheese & single serving canned meals
